As I await for my final grades, I recollect my past two years in the Journalism Course. I wonder if everything I’ve learned and all of the skills I have developed will be of value in the future of journalism. I am a perfect candidate for any multi media job, for I can write and produce any radio or television report, as well as produce online content. I am well aware of current affairs, as well as news worthy issues that are prominent. I am aware of different interests to different demographics. So why should I have anything to worry about? I worry, because the future of journalism, like the present and past of journalism will change and adjust as rapidly as social epidemics, which ironically, it thrives on. As society changes and adapts to new technology, the journalism industry must change with it. That puts a lot of pressure not only on the industry, but on journalists as well. And I, as a recent journalism graduate am intimidated by that, none the less, aware that I have an advantage, merely because I am a RECENT graduate.

Above all, I believe the future of journalism will be more flexible. Because social journalists and active journalists have made their way into the media as much as professional journalists, I believe news casts will have to adopt more flexible and casual standards. What will be accepted as news worthy will be more up to the public than the professionals.

How ever journalism changes, as a multi media talented journalist I feel I can adapt to any change or direction that the field may take me. I am confident and anxious to be a part of the industry and it’s future.

There are as many benifits to the web 2.0 as there are concequences. It’s only as fabulous as it is intimidating. Yin Yang: for every good there is bad.

Yin:I use facebook to find long lost friends. I use Flickr to share photos. I use delicious to seek new information.

Yang:But everytime I use facebook I ignore a friend next to me. Everytime I share a photo on flickr I miss out on seeking another, and everytime I learn something new on Delicious my library card gets moldier.

Twitter, Digg and Flickr are useless websites. They are like the no-name product that sits on the shelf between two name brands. They have nothing that WordPress, Facebook or Myspace doesn’t have. They’re just another website floating around in the web 2.0. Nothing else to say. However, WordPress is a great site. YES, it’s only one of the hundred and some- odd sites for blogging, but it has a more personal setting to it. I feel when I go on WordPress I’m writing in my journal… just that it’s a journal I share with the entire world. I can decorate my page, put in captions, really personalize it.

Yin: De.licio.us has taught me more useless information than Jeapordy has, and it’s exactly why I love it. It’s also helped clean up my computer.

Yin:And then theres Facebook- the ultimate social networking site on the World Wide Web.

Yang: Thanks to Facebook, many people never have to socialize with anyone ever again. Thanks to Facebook, stalkers have more power than ever, pediphiles have all the masturbation material they could ask for and (Yin) finding a keg party is at the click of a button.

Yang: I think society is so caught up with what to create now, next, tomorrow, what to learn now, what to talk about next, that our vision of the big picture is becoming more and more narrow. Society needs to concentrate on developing products, strategies, whatever, that will help our not so certain future, instead of (Digg)ing our heads into what some stranger has to say about their life.

Yin: But then that just reminds me of how grey the topic is; the real yin of the yang. Blogging sites really do bring people together in a way that wasn’t possible before. For instance, I wouldn’t have known about this protest happening in Queens Park regarding the North American Union if it weren’t for the internet. I wouldn’t find half my report ideas if it weren’t for the internet-

Yang: BUT how do I know what I wouldn’t have found if it weren’t for the internet. Because people found the resources before… we’re deffinately NOT smarter than our past generations- we’ve just made everything more convenient and easier to learn!

I DO love the internet, for it has expanded my employment opportunities (and my employable skills), pushed me to write more and has above all expanded my social network. I just don’t think it’s any good in the long run. I’m an old soul, I like things to be basic, simple, earn what you’ve got, work for what you want. I feel guilty being able to click a button and get what I want. But we all understand more than we know.

SO! This blog was supposed to say how I felt about the web 2.0- but it’s only proved how contemplative and indecisive I am. I DON’T have an opinion on the web… it’s just too grey. Sorry Roz.

Ps: I’ve searched for objectional articles about the web 2.0 on the internet, I guess it’s hard to find articles about hating the net on the net. Booh

My Daily Rant:

I’m no feminist, but I find it very hard to be content with the right’s and opportunities of being a woman. Everyday, I am repeatedly reminded that I live in a world completely run by men, specificaly white men. I wake up to an alarm clock that was manufactured in a male run corporation. I eat ceral that is produced by the Kellog brothers, a male run company. When I leave my house, that was built by and designed by men, drive in my car, on the roads, past buildings that were all designed and built by men to go to school so eventually i can work for a male run corporation. It’s overwhelming! I am surrounded by it, and it makes me sick! Wheres the sister love?!?!Exception- I do go to a school with a female president (AWSOME!) Props Mary Lynn West Moynes- props.

Carrying on, I pay my taxes to the city that is run by my white male mayor whose dirty work is actually handled by the male politicians and city employees. What is left to be mine is put in a bank, that is run by men, and what is payed to my cell phone company, fido- run by men. I go to the drugmart to get feminine napkins, and I stare at the wall, deciding which male run corporation (that created these pads “to control our unfortunate natural function”)to choose from. I scan the shelf full of “female anti-perspirents” to “control the nasty stench of our natural functions” because men said so. Ironically, I am told by any male I try to explain this to, to take some midol- a pill created to control our unfortunate natural function, because men figured we needed the help. AHHH! You get my point? WOW! What do we have to ourselves? This may be nothing but a rediculous, but a rant it is. From this day forward, I am making a promise to myself- to support and promote as many female run companies, corporations, products, businesses and organizations as possible.
Love.

End of rant- untill next time

As I’ve written in my ‘about’ page, I am currently finishing up my last semester as a journalism student at Mohawk College. I feel I’ve accomplished pretty much everything I had planned and am very satisfied with what I have learned from this course. Obviously there have been discouragements and dull days, but various classes have improved my confidence, my work ethic both academically and socially and my over all character as a student and a citizen.

A goal I have not yet accomplished is finding employment in the field. I wish to eventually become a foreign correspondent, and am finding it hard to find experience. Despite unavailable employment, I feel my workshop, also known as residency, is giving me more than enough material for an eventually great demo. Hopefully by April I will have established a professional demo, resume and profile to broaden my chance of employment. Hopefully even sooner, I can post various reports of mine on the site.
